SolNet - The solar network for urban spaces of the future

SolNet represents a new generation of urban solar technology: a lightweight, translucent solar rope net construction with integrated photovoltaic modules that not only generates clean energy, but also shades and enlivens sealed inner-city areas, improves the microclimate in the city - and is architecturally impressive.

The solar network was developed as part of a funded innovation project in Baden-Württemberg. The aim was to create an aesthetically appealing and technically safe solution that would enable solar energy to be generated directly on site in car parks, squares and other urban areas - a response to rising energy costs, the solar obligation in Baden-Württemberg and the growing demand for local energy supply.

Multiple benefits: Electricity is generated locally and can be stored - without the high primary energy losses associated with centralised grids. At the same time, SolNet provides targeted shading for sealed surfaces, reduces heat islands and enhances the urban environment. The net-like structure of the PV rope net construction offers openness, lightness and aesthetic appeal - contributing to "solar shading" with measurable added value for urban spaces.

The technological innovation lies, on the one hand, in the integration of robust lightweight PV modules into a delicate cable net support structure and, on the other hand, in the cable net construction itself, which was designed and calculated by project partner Prof. Dr. Rosemarie Wagner (from KIT). SolNet meets ecological, economic and social requirements in equal measure - from protection against vandalism to environmentally friendly rainwater drainage.

Whether for municipal utilities, companies, local authorities or as an additional source of solar power for private households, SolNet offers a sustainable, economically viable solution for implementing solar obligations, supplying charging infrastructure, optimising the microclimate in cities and designing urban spaces in a sustainable manner.

The advantages of the SolNet solar rope net construction:

  • Solar shading & climate protection
Well-designed shading reduces heat on sealed surfaces and noticeably improves the microclimate.
  • Architecturally appealing & functional
The solar rope net construction appears light and elegant and blends harmoniously into urban contexts as an urban design element.
  • Sustainable & resource-efficient
Reduced material usage, low-carbon building materials and the possibility of recycling make SolNet particularly environmentally friendly.
  • Local power generation without line losses
Direct energy generation on site - ideal for electric mobility, charging infrastructure and grid independence.
  • Customisable & future-proof
Whether solar roofing for car parks, schoolyards or public spaces - SolNet is modular, scalable and structurally flexible.
  • Light-giving & atmospheric
Dark areas are discreetly and aesthetically illuminated in the evening by solar-powered light sources - for a more pleasant atmosphere and greater safety.
